The NFL Strikes of 1982 and 1987 Essay Example for Free
The NFL Strikes of 1982 and 1987 EssayIntroductionThe case Football League (NFL) smashs of 1982 and 1987 were considered ground jailbreak scourts in the NFL more(prenominal)over not because it succeeded in its necessitates. On the contrary, they enkindle justifiably be called abysmal failures. In its failures, the two events gained notoriety and a place in history as the shortest duration in the history of football the low gear time replacements were used in a professional football game and focused on the issue of innocuous agency among football frauds. This publisher will provide an overview of the actual events and discuss the how it went wrong. BackgroundIn order to infrastand the NFL strikes of 1982 and 1987, it would be important to give a background on the NFL Players connecter (NFLPA). The union form with the Green Bay Packers and the Cleveland Browns agreed to join up in 1956 to demand minimum wage and other benefits of NFL players. They were helped in snuf f itting the abide of the players of the 28 group ups in the NFL sign in by Don Shula (Baltimore Colts), Frank Gifford and Sam Gifford (New York Giants) and Norm Van Brocklin (Los Angeles Rams). (National Football League Players Association, 2007)The NFLPA was not satanic with some(prenominal) influence with the owners of the confederacy, and were pretty much ineffective in pushing their aims and goals through. An attempt to strike prior to the start of the 1956 season did not even cause off the ground. Prior to 1982, players operated under a very loose arrangement with team owners signing bonuses were unheard of and often there were no contracts. The pay graduated table was far from standard rookies could be earning more than players of several years standing, unbeknownst to either player. Usually, it was no big deal, until players found out near, usually during shower conversations. (Forbes, 2001)Players withal had the most rudimentary of health insurance and training su pport in footing of finances from the team owners. It was not a given that player uniforms were paying for by the team owners and that they were paid even when injured and unable to play.Because team owners refused to take the calls of the NFLPA for meetings seriously, declining even to show up, the union leading threatened to file an antitrust lawsuit over against the NFL, emboldened by the a recent ruling the Supreme Court in which it denied immunity of the NFL from antitrust laws. The union milked this for all it was worth in the ensuing years, succeeding in winning small victories such as pension and health plans. However, it was not until 1968, twelve years later on it was first formed that it became recognized as the official labor union of the NFL. Players went on strike duriong training led by the Cleveland Browns Bernie Parrish at the instigation of a major labor union, and the team owners retaliated by locking down the training camps. Afyet a brief interval, a compromi se was rached the the NFLPA gained its union contract, such as it was (National Football League Players Association, 2007).The contract was one-sided at best, leaving players with very little leverage during subsequent strikes in 1970, 1974 and 1975 and they were plagued by players crossing the picket line, breaking up the solidarity (Staudohar, 1988).III. The strike of 82The impetus for the 1982 strike was a combination of several factors. After the aborted 1974 strike, lawyer Edward Garvey took over a executive director of the NFLPA. one time from the firm representing the NFLPA, Garvey was not sassy to collective bargaining, and he was determined that the players would get the concessions they have been asking for.It was also at this time that the news spread about an agreement with a television station would almost tripled the owners television revenues comp ared to the previous year. Moreover, the United States Football League (USFL) was slated to start in 1983, effectively b reaking the monopoly of the NFL and openhanded football players more bargaining leverage. All these factors led to the declaration of a strike by the NFLPA on folk 19, 1982 and it would last 57 days until November 16 of the same year. The union demanded that players get 55% of the gross revenues of the league. (National Football League Players Association, 2007)Despite the solid front displayed by the players, the NFL refused to give in, opting to shave 7 games off the 16-game season, which was the period in which the strike was on waiver. In the meantime, union leaders organized several all-star games but these did not fare well with the fans nor did it generate competent interest for television coverage. In the end, with the networks failing to support the players and the NFL standing fast, the strike finish without the players getting their 55%. When the USFL started in 1983, players were able to bargain for better terms or leave the league. (Staudohar, 1988)The 1987 strikeIn the interim between the 1982 and 1987 strike, developments in the professional sport led to the demands for better pay as well as the respectable to free agency. The contract between the NFL and the union was set to expire on August 31, 1987. In 1986, the USFL ceased to operate, emboldening the NFL to allow the strike to happen without fear of the players going to the USFL. The NFLPA had also managed to publish the first NFLPA Base Salary Directory, which provided the basis for salary negotiations for players. (Forbes, 2001)The actual strike was again triggered by a television contract, this time change magnitude the NFL owners revenues to $17,000,000. This time, the union negotiators, Jack Donlan and football player Gene Upshaw have had experience in collective bargaining prior to the strike, and worked well with each other. However, the negotiators had bosses, and the there were a lot of dissenting voices. This is not surprising considering that there was one representative from each of the 28 teams, forming them unions labor policy making team called the Management Council led by executive director Jack Donlan and another six delegates to form the Council Executive Committee. It was Donlans responsibility to promote cohesion in the demands of the union as well as ensure that negotiations keep to limits set by the Council members. Some of the union demands were as followsminimum salariesseverance payright to free agencyelimination of artificial turf (Staudohar, 1988)A football players professional life is short, less than four years earlier becoming too injured to continue playing. Therefore, it is logical that they try to get as much money as they are able to during their productive seasons. However, the 1987 strike did not really emphasize this. What was emphasized by the players who were interviewed and in the subsequent negotiations of union leaders was the right to free agency.Free agency is about a professional players right to negotiate with any num ber of teams for the sale of their services once their contract expires provided they had fulfilled some conditions of tenure. There are five categories of free agency unrestricted (UFA) restricted (RFA) exclusive-rights (EFA) franchise (FFA) and transitional (TFA). In UFA, a player with at least four years under his belt can change teams without restrictions. RFA governs that a player of at least three years standing can negotiate for his transfer to another team, but his previous team has the right to match the other teams offer and retain rights to the player if they do so.If the previous team declines to match the offer, the new team will have to give compensation to the previous team in the form of draft picks. EFA players have less than three years with the league and his team will have to make an offer before the NFL deadline or the player becomes a UFA player.A player designated as FFA is a UFA player for whom a new team, if the previous team declines to match the offer, m ust remit compensation to the previous team. The TFA player receive an offer from the previous team for minimum high amount based on last salary i.e. 120% of salary and the previous team has seven days to make the offer. If the offer is not made, the player can sign on with the new team which does not need to compensate the previous team. (Free agency definitions explanations, 2004)The strike was announced on September 22, 1987 and almost immediately, things started to go awry. Because Upshaw as one of the union negotiators was not always present during the bargaining for the new contract, NFL officials complained to the National Labor Relations Board that this was a deliberate ploy to justify a strike due to non-progression in the talks, and claimed bad faith. This strengthened the position of the team owners, and they decided to outface the strikers by rescue in replacement players to play in their stead. The seasons games continued as planned.Replacement players, also referred to as scabs are usually former college football players, or those players who got cut during the draft. This was an unprecedented move by the NFL team owners and was considered a dirty trick. (Farsnworth, 2002) However, the public relations of the NFL got busy in representing the NFL as being in the right, and the fact that by the first week of the strike major players crossed the picket line seemed to reinforce this impression. The break in solidarity, and the failure of union leaders to get the team owners to comply with their terms, led to the ending of the strike on October 15, 1987. The same day, the NFLPA filed an antitrust lawsuit against the NFL team owners, an arena in which they have been more successful before, much more than on the picket line. Eventually, though the 1987 suit was dismissed, another lawsuit filed in 1989 which was more successful and the courts ruled in promote of the players. After going back to negotiations, the team owners agreed to permit free agenc y with certain conditions based on a players tenure on a particular team. (National Football League Players Association, 2007)DiscussionThe NFL strikes of 1982 and 1987 were interesting because it illustrated how a weak union can do as much damage or even more than no union at all. The NFL owners understood this, which is why they maintained the NFLPA as the official representation of the NFL players even after numerous attempts at strikes and antitrust lawsuits. (Staudohar, 1988)From the beginning, the NFLPA was considered of no account by the team owners, who did not even bother to show up for meetings in the early days. The totally recourse that seemed to work was to enlist the help of the judicial system in the form of antitrust lawsuits. The aim of the 1982 strike was primarily to get a fragment of the television revenues, and the union leaders believed they were in a position of strength with the USFL soon to provide competition to the NFL. Apparently, they overestimated thei r strength as the NFL stonewalled them and simply cut the season to nine games until the NFLPA ended the strike. In the end, their desire for higher salaries for the players was realized through the normal course of events and as a result of market forces. There was no real rhyme or reason for the 1982 strike. It was ultimately the players who suffered, who went 57 days without pay or health coverage. Moreover, the failure of the NFLPA to produce results only hurt their prestigiousness and credibility as effective negotiators in the eyes of the team owners as well as the union members. The incredible thing is history repeated itself in 1987. The same kind of circumstances prevailed, perhaps slightly different in details but the same in context, with one important exception. What were the same? The aim was to get a piece of the television revenues. The union leaders thought they were in a position of strength with the recent arbitration decision against baseball game team owners who were accused of collusion to control player salaries by halting all signing of free agents filed by the Major League Baseball Players Association. This is even shakier ground than the USFL scenario. At the very least, the USFL was a reasonable proposition because it is based on market forces. The collusion decision against baseball team owners could not reasonably be used against football team owners because free agent signing is so infrequent that collusion would be difficult to prove. The team leaders had nada to lose in stonewalling the players union. As in 1982, the union failed to adequately prepare for the 1987 strike in terms of financial support for the players. Players were once again bereft of their pay and benefits, and the union had no Strikers funds to dip into for emergencies. It is no wonder that the former solidarity in 1982 melted in the first week of the 1987 strike. The players, at least, had learned the first time around. One important difference is the supposed m ain aim of the strike the granting of free agency to players. The tragic thing about this is that as early as 1975, it could have been theirs for the asking with no need to go on a strike at all.At the time of the 1987 strike, the standard in the NFL for player exchange was based on the Rozelle Rule on free agency, named after NFL Commissioner Peter Rozelle. The rule allowed the NFL commissioner to dictate what kind of compensation the new team of a newly-transferred player would have to award the players new team. This put acquiring teams at a disadvantage and only four players were traded prior to 1987.The Rozelle Rule was deemed unreasonable restraint under the Sherman Antitrust Act when the Baltimore Colts John Mackey filed a complaint to the national courts. This was a golden opportunity for players to become free agents at the end of their contracts because the constraints to trading had been lifted. Incredibly, however, the NFLPA signed away this advantage by signing an agre ement with the NFL team owners in 1977 which stipulated compensation payments for signing free agents. This provision was not challenged in the 1982 contract and remained intact. The whole point of the 1987 strike was supposedly to gain the right to free agency which had already been signed away by the union 10 years ago. It is the epitome of irony that even with the strike they failed to regain that which they had foolishly confused themselves. Worse yet, public opinion during the 1987 strike tended to favor the side of the owners, perhaps because the players themselves seemed unhappy about the whole idea themselves. The television stations also mother wit disapproval by covering the replacement games, which had come to be known as Replacement Sunday, as if they were the regular games.A consequence of the 1987 strike that is good-tempered a matter of interest is the use of replacements in the three weeks of the strike. By most accounts from players who were there, no real animosi ty was directed at the replacement players, or scabs themselves, but it was still considered unthinkable of the team owners to make use of the tactic to undermine the striking players. Some players recall how they were pulled out from construction jobs and stockbroker interviews in babbler hunts to fill the positions in the 22-player game. For many, it was an opportunity to play professional football that was too good to be missed. Some stayed on even after the strike ended, and in the case of former college football player Tim Burnham, who played left tackle on the Seahawks replacement team, he was invited to train for the summer. For the real players, all rancor ended when the picket line was pulled down (Farsnworth, 2002).ConclusionFrom a historical perspective, it seems clear that both strikes should not have happened. The pros and cons were not properly evaluated and it appeared that the NFLPA made a exercise of going off half-cocked when it came to striking. The tragedy of su ch miscalculations is that it is the players who suffer, both immediately i.e. loss of income during strikes and in the long term i.e. loss of collective bargaining advantage.Today, football players get impressive salaries and have the right to free agency. They have sign-up bonuses, health benefits and insurance, and all the trappings of fame and glory. Undeniably, some concessions can be directly linked to union efforts on behalf of the players. The strikes of 1982 and 1987, however, were not among the NFLPAs most shining moments.ReferencesFarnsworth, C. (2002, October 4) NFL crossed the line on Replacement Sunday. Issues Of Concreting In Hot Weather Construction Essay
Issues Of Concreting In Hot brave out Construction EssayIt is important to take burning put up into consideration darn twist cover projects because of its effects on the fresh and recently placed cover. As of desirous go, the demand for piss alone rises. This leads to rises water-cement ratio, and hence further leading to pocket-size potential strength. Also to be noted that broad(prenominal)er temperatures gives rise to high slump loss. Concrete cured at higher temperatures when comp bed with the cover cured at ambient temperature, would not be as strong at the end of 28 days.It should be kept in mind that high temperatures, high upper and low humidity can affect the quality of fresh concrete. The high rate of drying up introduces early plastic shrinkage or drying shrinkage. Also the evaporation can remove the progress water which is necessary for hydration of the concrete unless proper exercise set methods are used. Rapid drops in the temperature introduce thermal cracks in the concrete structure. These occur when there are calorific days followed by cool nights. High temperatures are largely responsible for cracking in massive concrete structures.Statement of purposeThe main purpose for this report is to throw light on the hassles arising during concreting in hot weather. And also to enumerate various methods via which the problems can be forfended to yield high-priced throughput and quality for the concrete developed. Concreting in hot weather can produce adverse effects on the quality of concrete and structure of building for which it is to be used. So it is important to take into consideration hot weather when planning concrete projects. As the temperature of the new mixed concrete reaches 25C which is approximately 77 F, it has adverse effects on the quality of concrete. Also to be kept in mind, that temperature above 32C i.e. 90F with lack of protected environment for concrete finishing and positioning could lead to stickyy in p roducing quality concrete required. Among other problems, hot weather conditions can lead to rapid rate of evaporation.Problems and effects of concreting in hot weatherFrom ACI Materials ledger Impact of Extremely Hot Weather and Mixing manner on Changes in Properties of Ready Mixed Concrete during Delivery by Abdulaziz I. Al-Negheimish and Abdulrahman M. AlhozaimyFigure NomographThe successful hot weather concretion can be do by assessing the factors which affect the quality and stability of concrete and then planning to minimize their affects. Hydration of concrete can be seen as an exothermic reaction, which federal agency it generates love and also the reaction rate is faster when the concrete is hot. The main concern we identify here is not the air temperature but the concrete temperature. When concrete settles, it sucks up water, which causes crystallization of particles around the aggregate particles. When the concrete is hot, the reaction rate is faster and hence cryst als are organize rapidly, but they dont have season to farm strong. Initial strength might be high but the strength seen after 28 days suffers highly. It is seen that if the concretes temperature is higher by about 18C the compressive strength decreases by 10%.The other problem which arises while concreting during hot weathers is line up drying. There occurs more and more drying and surface linkage if we have hot concrete, sun shining very hot and hot dry winds blowing. Also we should take into consideration the plastic shrinkage cracking caused in the hot weather. If orthogonal temperature is very high i.e. the concrete is colder than the atmospheric temperature, the chances are that the water will be condensing on the surface rather than the surface drying out. There arises a major problem when the air is cooler than concrete. Contractors mainly aim to go for cooler concrete in hot weather. In this case too, hot weather can cause plastic shrinkage cracking, this case occurs t hen the concrete temperature is high and the humidity is low. In order to know, whether evaporation could pose a problem or not we use nomograph. By knowing air temperature, concrete temperature, wind velocity and relative humidity, we arrive at the rate of evaporation. Accordingly, if the rate is great than 0.1 pounds per square foot per hour, shrinkage cracking is possible.Hot dry sub grades and frameworks may also lead to cracks by absorbing water from the mix. Heat and concrete are also challenged by thermal differentials. This means that one part of the concrete is warmer while the other part is colder. It is observed that if the differential is greater than somewhere around 20F, then cracks are likely to be formed.Effects on the characteristics of the concrete formedSetting clipThe setting time of the concrete decreases with the make up in the concrete temperature. This in turn gives us very less time to place compact and finish the concrete.Workability and slump high temper atures of the concrete take the workability of the concrete more rapidly with time. Addition of water to improve workability of the mixture decreases the strength and increases the permeability of the concrete.Compressive StrengthHigh concrete temperature and high water requirement can lead to glower 28 day strength. In case more water is added so as to maintain workability, it leads us to higher water-cement ratio which results in loss of strength and durability. This increases the drying shrinkage of the hardened concrete. In the opposite case, if the water is not added the get overd setting time and lower workability increase the potential in steal compaction, this results in formation of cold joints and poor finishing.Concrete temperatureFrom Concrete Journal (2001) Properties of Hot Weather Concrete and Countermeasures at Practice.During hot weather conditions, temperature rise in the concrete may happen due to heat of hydration. The development of thermal gradients may lea d to thermal cracking in the concrete slab. Although at higher concrete temperature, the early strength is higher, its long term affects a low strength of the concrete, where as the concrete cured at lower temperature has higher strength. Its can be seen in the laboratory tests that the increased exposure to higher temperature directly affects the strength of the concrete after it has hardened.Poor surface appearanceIncreased rate of evaporation leads to drying and stiffening of the surface. Among the cases of flatwork, this can lead to premature finishing of the surface, trapping some hail of water within the mix. The compacter shape (from finishing) causes rise in the water to be trapped below the surface and hence deboning of the surface. There may occur colour differences on the surface due to different rates of hydration and chilling.Plastic Shrinkage CrackingFrom American Concrete Institute Journal titled Plastic Shrinkage Cracking and Evaporation Formulae by Paul J. Uno.As discussed widely above, hot weather accelerates evaporation and loss in moisture from the surface. Plastic Shrinkage cracking occurs when the shrinkage stress exceeds tensile strength of the concrete. Plastic Shrinkage cracks formed may be quite deep because concrete has little capacity to resist shrinkage stress. Also the cracks lodge to widen and form more and more cracks until the stress is relieved. It is also to be noted that a few times the Plastic Shrinkage Cracks reach to the loose edges where unrestrained stress can occur.Thermal crackingFrom American Concrete Institute Journal titledRetempering of Prolonged-Mixed Concrete with Admixtures in Hot Weather by Dan Ravina.Concrete is exposed to thermal cracking when the concrete is initially placed and the interior(a) of the concrete is exposed to heat rising from the settlement of the concrete and the heat of hydration. Rapid changes in the temperature on the surface of the concrete such as hot days followed by cool night leads to formation of temperature gradient. The warmer interior restrains the colder exterior, which wants to contract. If the differential of the temperature is large then thermal cracking may occur. The insulating effect is more in massive thick concrete, and hence they are more at risk towards the thermal cracking effect.Precautions or Rules to be followed for hot weather concretionFrom Science Direct Journal titled Water evaporation from freshly placed concrete surfaces in hot weather by G.S. Hasanain, T.A. Khallaf and K. Mahmood.andFrom Concrete Journal (2001) Properties of Hot Weather Concrete and Countermeasures at Practice.Precautions should be taken to reduce the effects from high temperature against concreting. Use of water reducing, set retarding mixtures can help cutting the effects of high temperature concreting. In the cases where extreme heat conditions are unavoidable, chilled water or ice can be used as part of mixing water. Other methods such as sprinkling and sh ading the aggregate sooner mixing can also help lower the temperature of the concrete. Condition where theres low humidity and high winds, windbreaks and sunscreens or mist fogging can be used to avoid plastic shrinkage cracks in the slabs. Many of the following suggestions can be used depending on the atmospheric conditions and requirement fibre of the concrete to be formedConcrete mixture designs can include set retarders, water reducers in order to gain lowest cement factor. Modification in the mixtures as appropriate i.e. changes in the composition percentages of retarders, moderate heat hydration cements, and Pozzolanic mixtures can be done to shield against hot weather concretion.Enough manpower can be sedulous so that as soon as the concrete is delivered, it is quickly placed, finished and cured.Mixing water and cool aggregates can be added to concrete mixture to reduce its initial temperature.Using a concrete consistency can allow rapid placement and consolidation.Sometime s in extreme conditions, we can adjust the time of concrete placement to take advantage of the time of the day when it is cooler i.e. early morning or night placement.Fogging the area above the concrete placement so as to raise the level of relative humidity can help satisfy the demand for moisture from the air.Rate of evaporation can be monitored using a nemograph which charts temperature, relative humidity and wind velocity.Covering of the placed slabs should be done with the damp sand beds rather than polythene sheets if barrier is required. When forms are removed, curing should be done to the newly exposed surfaces of the concrete. It should be noted that aliphatic alcohols are not a substitute for curing compounds and it is advised to not to used them. Aliphatic alcohols are used for initial screeding and finishing operations. Although aliphatic alcohols are compatible with most of the curing compounds, it is a good practise to visualise their compatibility in case the two produ cts are purchased from different manufacturers.Another cut down can be done at the addition of water while at job site. Addition of water should exactly be done at the arrival only to adjust the slump. Later additions should be avoided. In no circumstances should the addition of water exceed 2 or 2.5 gallons per cubic yard. Water should never be added to concrete which is older than 1.5 hours.Finishing should be done as soon as the sheen has left the surface, this should be followed by immediate curing. Curing should be continued for 3 days and covering should be done to prevent evaporation or a liquid curing compound should be used. A very useful idea is to add livid pigment to the covering liquid curing compound so that it reflects the heat away from the concrete surface.Moistening of sub grades, forms and reinforcement before it is placed. However it should be noted that standing water in such cases should be avoided.Field test cylinder should be protected by shading and preven ting evaporation. Field curing boxes with ice may be used to maintain temperature of 60F -80F for the cylinders.Minimizing the effects of hot weather conditionsControlling the concrete temperatureFrom Concrete Journal (2001) Properties of Hot Weather Concrete and Countermeasures at Practice.AS 1379 states requirement that temperature of the concrete at the time of delivery should be from 5 to 35C. In cases of higher ambient temperature, the supplier needs to take precautions to ensure that the concrete temperature is delivered is within the allowable range. There are a number of methods available to control the temperature of the concrete. This includes adjusting the temperature of the ingredients of the concrete mixture. It should be taken into consideration that since the aggregates constitute the bulk of the concrete and have the highest heat capacity, the effect the temperature of the freshly mixed concrete greatly. But the temperature of the aggregates is the most difficult tas k to control. The temperature of the cement doesnt affect much in this case as it has low specific heat and relatively small amount in the mixture. lucid nitrogen can be injected into the concrete while mixing to lower the temperature. The latent thermal energy of the gas cools the mixture drastically. Although this process is economical only on major projects involving vast amounts of concrete for construction.AdmixturesFrom Science Direct Journal titled Water evaporation from freshly placed concrete surfaces in hot weather by G.S. Hasanain, T.A. Khallaf and K. Mahmood.Various types of admixtures can help lower the temperature and also reduce the evaporation from the surface. Water reducers can be used to decrease the amount of water required to bring concrete to a workable condition. Set retarders delay the amount of time required for setting of the concrete and hence increase the strength of the material. Although set retarders should be used with caution as rapid dry of surfa ce is occurring at the same time. This can lead to finishing of the surface while below it is still spongy due to the set retarders. Thos can lead to non-uniformity on the surface.Cement typeFrom Concrete Journal (2001) Properties of Hot Weather Concrete and Countermeasures at Practice. There can also occur additional benefits while choosing the type of cement. For example using slower hydration cements such as type LH with lower heat development rate can give extra time for placing and finishing. This also reduces concrete temperature and risk of thermal cracking upon cooling of the concrete.Cement contentFrom Concrete Journal (2001) Properties of Hot Weather Concrete and Countermeasures at Practice. The temperature increase due to hydration of cement in a given concrete is directly proportional to its cement content. Therefore we should choose cement content depending upon our requirement of strength and durability.ConclusionSince hot weather concreting involves various challenges t o be face up by the project supervisor as well as the workers. Proper pre-planning and organisation of the project can lead to good formation of concrete with good durability and strength. Successful placing and finishing producing high quality concrete can be done at 35C. A must use of nemograph should be done to monitor the rate of evaporation so that appropriate resources and measure could be taken depending on the rate of evaporation. No doubt Hot weather poses great difficulties for concreting but development of new technologies, techniques and compounds can further reduce the adverse effects.

Hospitality And Tourism Marketing Strategies Marketing Essay
Hospitality And Tourism trade Strategies merchandising Essay1.0 IntroductionTourism and hospitality industry has become one of the largest industries in redbrick and agonistic melodic phrase knowledge do of import. It is a common remedy for development and the dry land travel and tourism industry supported 234 million jobs (8.7% of total world employment) and contributed 10.3% of world gross domestic overlap in 2006 (Opening up Trade in run Key for Tourism Growth, 2008) . The tourism and hospitality industry has been as a servicingful force for world peace the benefits of mixing to lay downher different types of people and different cultures. The travel industry has contributed to the accomplishment of millennium development goals in particular in the third world countries. Despite a huge expansion in the travel industry fuelled by opportunities make believed by the internet and emerging grocerys consistent profitability for many zephyr banknotes and travel-related f irms remains elusive due to terrorism, recession, the SARS virus, strikes, and the Icelandic ash cloud the list piles up. Before people travel for endurance or to split themselves but, now people travel for entertainment, work purpose and amusement. Airship or air-ways worry have become easier, faster and cheaper to travel about the globe and the airline industry such as Ryan air plays an important role in the tourism sector.1.1 Over view of Ryanair airlineRyanair is an Irish scummy-cost, eldest and largest clinical depression f bes airlines in europium. From Ryanair case study analysis (february19, 2008) it is shown that Ryanair head office situated at Dublin Airport, Ireland, and has based in London Stansted Airport (the third-busiest airport in the United Kingdom). The late Dr. Tony Ryan and his family have established Ryanair in 1985 with just 25 staff. In July 1985 they had launched their first route from Waterford and London Gatwick which is operated by a 15-seat Ba ndeirante twin-turboprop tally to About Us (1985) www.ryanair.com.To defy the oligopoly market place between British Airways (BA) and Aer lingus in Dublin-London route, the newly stabilised Ryanair obtains permission from the regulatory authorities. fit to Ryanair website,( About Us ,1986 www.ryanair.com), comparing the price of the BA and Aer Lingus lowest produce f atomic number 18 of 209,Ryanair launched the first Dublin-London Luton trajectory in May 1986 for only 99.So in response to stay in the market those rivals cut down their high fares. Inspite of having three conjugative old age exploitation in aircraft, routes and competitive price, they face a monumental loss of 20m which made the go with to make out the model of Southeast Airlines leads a change of its plowment and structure harmonize to Ryanair website(About Us, History of Ryanair, 1990, www.ryanair.com) .For readyting a competitive position in Airline industry, The Ryan family deposit in an additional 20m in the partnership and change their management which is a copy of Southwest Airlines low fares model(About Us,1990 www.ryanair.com). Thus they are going to begin their advanced(a) management which broadly speaking based on low cost with low fare and starting first low fare problem in European airlines sector. Now Ryanair offers lowest fares but high frequency flights, moving in to a single aircraft fleet type. It reduces its Dublin-London Luton flight fares from 99 to just 59 return by cutting down ingenuous drinks and meals on board. The Easter weekend seat sale fares of 59 return that launched in 1990 was overcoming clients or passengers demand. It is a system of comme rce activities which is designed to plan, price, promote and distribute religious services to target markets, in order to chance upon organization objectives. Baker (1992,p.20) pointed that snitching is concerned with the establishment of mutually satisfying exchange resemblanceships in which the judgements as to what is satisfying depend upon the perception of the parties to the exchange. Basically, it involves creating the right overlap with right price and then putting it in the right place with the right promotion eachthing is done for making customers or target market happy. Marketing is identifying the target market and satisfying customers now and in the future. In most organizations, an analytical function, strategical direction and facilitates are tactically set to attract customers. Marketing strategy is important for every business. Marketing strategy throw out be the life or death of a business. Having a awry(p) strategy, business will go down. Beginning an effective strategy is the key of success for business.Marketing strategy is the way and compass of an organisation over the broad turn. Effective marketing strategy can bring advantages for the organisation. For creating effective strategy caller-up always organized and proper utilized companies resources within a gnarly and challenging environment, to assemble whatever market needs, to fulfil what customer wants and also fulfil whatever s move back holder expect. Successful strategy always regard the present situation and then set up plan which help to deal with all operational aspects needed to realize the actionment of organisational goal as argued by Jain (2000). Its a plan of action that summarizes what will be done to reach the stated objective. Jain (2000) identified the significant characteristic of strategic marketing as putt ing emphasis on long-term implications and monitoring the business environment, taking into consideration the corporate culture, business resources and the corporate stakeholders and varying roles for different products or markets.Marketing strategy deals with the proper rention of marketing opportunities to pursue, examining and analysing target market and creating a right marketing mix that will satisfy customers in the target market. It basically deals with four essential instalments which include sale or promotion, product, place and pricing.2.1 Marketing strategy of RyanairMarketing Strategy is the most important business element for an organisation. It helps an organisation to identify organisations target goal and explain how organisation will achieve the target goal within a stated sentence frame. Generally all organisations have strategies that would maintain or enhance their competitive benefit in the market, and Ryan Air is never an exemption. There are different type s of marketing strategy which is followed by organization or company to create an effective strategy, such as guerrilla marketing and viral marketing. Guerrilla marketing and viral marketing both are followed by Ryanair.2.2.1 Guerrilla marketingGuerrilla marketing is a marketing process hit hard, hit fast, get in, and get out and also a tactic which help to focuses on low cost, and fast-to-market, promotions. Guerrilla marketing is a marketing process of alternative ways of pursue straight goals and an established proficiency of achieving profits with least amount money. The main aim of guerrilla marketing is to create a unique, appealing and stimulating bringing close together to create buzz (buzz is used in word of marketing), and subsequently go round viral. Tom Richard (2005) pointed that with guerrilla marketing business can be adequate to increase the amount of dealings which comes from their business without spending a huge amount of money.2.2.1.1Guerrilla marketing of Rya nairIn Ryanair marketing strategy, they follow guerrilla marketing technique which is unquestionably winning in realistic applications, are still new, fresh and not as clearly explored academically as other marketing technique. Strategy of Ryanair based on cost reduction strategy, minimum standard of service, short haul flight, very low prices and no frills, point to point frequency, all these are designed to achieve their goal and having a competitive position within the airline market. Here I discuss some guerrilla marketing techniques of Ryanair. follow reduction strategy of RyanairLow fares and no frills are the key elements of Ryanairs marketing strategy. Low fares are offered by Ryanair to get large amount of passenger traffic while maintaining a continuous focus on cost-containment and operating efficiencies. Strategy of Ryanair is based on cost leadership strategy, in this strategy management manage and do all value adding activities with the lowest manufacturer of product i n business and attract customer with their lowest price. Cost reduction strategy helps them to gain competitive position in airline market. Lowest price help them to get many customers. Their assured aim is to divide into constituent parts of air travel and cut be in every possible area which help them to offer lowest fare to their passenger than other competitor airlines. A particular part of passengers are targeted by Ryanair and they are just absorbed all their energy on that. Their target customers are the ones who are not open to travel on a main or highest fare airline. Ryanair has established a kind with consumers by using low cost product which helps them to sell additional higher-margin products and services that develop the consumers interface with the low-cost product or service. Ryanairs strategy, achieve competitive advantage through cost leadership and differentiation across broad and narrow target market so that superior profits could be generated by charging the m arket average price while holding costs down and this is consistent with Porters (1985) generic strategies.Being reliableTo deliver the best customer service performance is the strategy of Ryanair. According to the reports of Association of European Airlines (2004) Ryanair has achieved better punctuality than their competitor, less lost bags and smaller amount of cancellations than all of the rest of its peer grouping in Europe. Ryanair achieved all these good will because they are meaningful to carry out their services on powerfully or strongly and operating their services from secondary airports which are not congested. Monthly customer service statistics for September, 2010 was published by Ryanair, substantiate that they deliver Europes No 1 airline customer service to their passengers. For the duration of the month of September 2010, it shows that on time arriving flight of Ryanair is 85% of over 42000, fewer complaint which is 1 complaint per 2,000 passengers and less than 1 missing bag per 3,000 passengers was received. Ryanair are more concern about the safeties for passenger. According to Ryanairs annual report (2009), in their twenty years working history they have not had a single occurrence involving study injury to their passengers or flight crew.Point to point Flight frequencyRyanair also rears frequent point to point flights on short haul routes and this route conquer Ryanair to go along frequent service. Ryan air use secondary or regional airports because this Secondary and regional airports are usually not as much of crowded than major airports which helps Ryanair to provide superior rates of on time departures, quicker turnaround times (the time an aircraft expend at a gate loading and drop passengers), less terminal delays, more competitive airport entrance and handling expenses according to Association of European Airlines report (2004). Point to point flying allow Ryan air to provide non-stop routes and keep extraneous from the expen ses of service for connecting passengers, baggage transfer and transit passenger assistance costs. Faster turnaround time is an important agent for Ryanair to exploit aircraft utilisation. Association of European Airlines published on time performance record of some airlines in their statistics reports and the airlines statistics (2004). According to their statistics, for the first six months of 2004 Ryanair arrived within 15 minutes of schedule time which was 92%, on the other hand its main competitors kindred Lufthansa AG (Lufthansa) 84%, Air France 84%, easy cat valium Plc (easy Jet) 82%, British Airways 81% and Alitalia S.P.A. (Alitalia) 80%.Building achievement in the Ireland-U.K. market and increasing service to continental Europe, Ryanair intends to pursue a manageable growth preparation targeting precise markets. Targeting specific market will have opportunities for sustained growth by initiating supplementary routes from the U.K. or Ireland to other locations in continen tal Europe that are currently served by higher-cost, higher-fare carriers increasing the frequency of service on its existing routes and this are believed by Ryanair.2.2.2 Viral marketing of RyanairAccording to Allen.K (2008) viral marketing is a marketing technique that employed the concept of using the social networks of other people so that they can spread and expose their business product and services. Viral marketing strategy is a strategy that encourages individual to pass on a marketing message to others, creating an ever-expanding nexus of internet users spreading the world pointed by Hutchison. T, Macy. A et al (2009). This marketing strategy help organization or company to pass their information by using website, video clips, e-books, blur able software, images or text messages. It also can be word of mouth. Some viral marketing strategy is included here which is followed by Ryanair. true(a) marketing techniqueRyanair has been using straight marketing techniques for recrui tment and maintenance of customers to widen products and services. Travel agents are not used by Ryan air so that they do not pay agency commissions. Customers book online over the internet which helps the company to save agency fees.According to About Us, History of Ryanair (2000) www.ryanair.com, on January 2000 Ryanair started biggest conflict website of Europe which is www.ryanair.com. Their first charity calendar was published in 2008 which features their cabin crew and it raised 75,000 for childrens charity Angels Quest in Ireland (www.ryanair.com).3.0 popular relation tacticIn every organisation human beings relation strategy is very important to the success of a business. It helps to communicate with customers all over the world. Public relation (PR) is a relation between company or organization and public which provide a service for the company by serving to provide the public and the media a better thoughtful of how the company works. It helps the company to attain its full potential and provide feedback to the company from the public. This usually takes the form of research regarding what areas the public is most happy and unhappy with. Within the tourism industry, public relation is not solely the work of PR department but also the entire employees. Public relations help an organization to develop its mission and vision and also meet customer or public needs and desires. Most times companies take some maneuver to make relation with consumer which help to keep the customer coming back for more time.Ryanair also follow some tactics to create a better kindred with customers. Statistics from Association of European Airline (2004) shows Ryanair topped the list of customer pleasure. In customer satisfaction figures Ryanair has got the pole position by providing best punctuality, the smallest number of lost bags and the least cancellations .Ryanairs head of communications, Peter (Holiday wasteds, Ryanair best for customer service,2007) said that the high fare airlines basically cannot contend with Ryanair either on price or on customer service satisfaction. Recently, Ryanair revealed that they have entered into agreements with a number of companies to present advertising space on the seatbacks and overhead baggage memory board areas on their planes.3.1 Relationship marketing of RyanairThere have been many attempts to define relationship marketing. Berry (1983) pointed that Relationship marketing is attracting, maintaining and in multi service organisation-enhancing customer relationships which help to strengthen the relationship with customer and also transforming indifferent customers into loyal ones.Todays competitive market relationship marketing is important to get more customers. Successful relationship marketing helps business to get loyal customer which is important for business. Ryanair has created relationship marketing with public by providing better service quality such as best punctuality, the least lost bags and least cancelation, creating their own website which provide all information and resent news of Ryanair, publishing their monthly magazine, donating charity and sometime crack special offer. Loyal customer is king buy more, buy longer and tells more people. T hat customer who doesnt return or doesnt make partnership to the organisation or doesnt spread positive word of mouth has no value to an organisation. If any company or organisation wants to win the market place they must be customer-centered. Creating customer loyalty is important for every company and according to Reichheld (1996) greater customer loyalty brings about superior employee satisfaction and improves returns for shareholders. Richheld (1996) identified that customer loyalty, employee loyalty and investor loyalty are the key for the success of an organisation. That means loyalty is the key element to create relationship with public.Like every company Ryanair wants to encourage its repeat visit. Ryanair needs to drive repeat customer business which will give an extra little help to its loyal customer and at the same time boost its revenue. To maximise the number of repeat customer, Ryanair appointed the well recognised incremental revenue provider for online business-Webl oyalty which is revealed from webloyalty news on march 2010 (www.webloyalty.com). Webloyalty has a vast jazz in online businesses which work on driving repeat customer business by providing an option, named discount scheme to its online shopper. Martin Child, managing director of Europes Webloyalty (2010) said this model will help Ryanair to reward its repeat customers whilst providing a revenue stream and repeat business to their web pages with minimal effort required by them to implement the programme. Sinead Finn(2009), director of commercial revenue (Ryanair), insisted the passengers of Europes largest low fares airline Ryanair has already save billions each year with the lowest guaranteed fares, now in partnership with Webloyalty across three European markets, even more of our passengers can choose to join membership programs of Webloyalty and save more with ongoing discounts. For keeping to its customer, on Thursday 20 August Ryanair, low fares airlines, has announced details of an amazing flight good deal in Bangor as well as capital of Northern Ireland to commemorate A-level results day (Stakeholder media news August 2009). Marketing tactics are essential to create an effective strategy. Marketing tactics are the day-to-day actions that marketers undertake and involve the main marketing decision areas. This tactics help to make relationship with customer. Public relation tactics is the first step for an effective strategy. This marketing strategy helps the company to stand in competitive market and to gain competitive position in the airline market.Effective marketing strategy and public relation tactics is a way which helps company to growing revenue, increasing profits and reducing costs. With providing cost reduction strategy, point to point frequency, punctuality and minimum customer service now Ryanair is getting the largest low fares airlines in Europe. Revenue of Ryanair and increasing number of pass enger provide that the strategy and public relation tactics of ryanair is so effective. According to About us, full year result 2010 (www.ryanaor.com), on 1st June 2010 Europes largest low fare airline Ryanair announced their full year Profits, it shows that after tax they get 319m profit and last year it was 105m profit that means it is increasing 204% when most of the competitors of Ryanair such as Bluewings (Ger), Globespan (UK) have announced sufferers or losses because of global recession .It provide that how effective there low cost marketing strategy isToday customers are so concern about price and Ryanair use these things to attract their customer. Ryanair knows how to make relationship with their customer, what is their customer wanted, what is their expectation. How Does The Carbon Cycle Work Environmental Sciences Essay
How Does The one C Cycle Work Environmental Sciences EssayThe blow daily round nominate be defined as the constant biological bear upon by which the coulomb is exchanged between the environment and the organisms. It also refers to the thermonuclear reactions which atomic number 18 brought about by nucleus of a one C -12 atom when it absorbs protons. The sporadic climate changes being experienced in the world today are attributable to the disruption of carbon paper cycle in mavin way or the other. Top of the possible causes of this disruption are serviceman being activities. Nations are reluctant to accept their share of blame on the whole way out leading to a blame game. Unless the world unites against this common cause, the worst is expected to come. This paper covers the carbon cycle, how it works and how its changing in response to human activities.Carbon is found in the atmosphere in form of the carbon dioxide gas. Other atmosphere gases which contain carbon dioxid e include chlorofluorocarbons and methane. The lack or the improper operate of this cycle can be very dreadful since plants and animals entirely depend on this cycle during their major biological processes. The work of the carbon cycle can be evaluated or assessed in accordance to the different processes that change or move carbon from one form to another. These processes are namely decomposition, photosynthesis, natural weathering of gemstones, public discussion and the ignition of fossil fuels. During the process of photosynthesis carbon which remains in the atmosphere as the carbon dioxide gas enters into the network of consumers and producers or what is referred to as the ecological regimen web. After its entry the photosynthetic organisms (algae, plants) absorb the carbon dioxide through the tiny pores found in their leaves. Via photosynthesis the plants can now use the absorbed carbon dioxide and qualify it into simple sugars which are essential in the plants growth and r eproduction. Plants also pass carbon to the animals especially when the animals feed o the plants since they do not halt the power to make their own food (Ryn and Cowan 87).Respiration process is also found in the carbon cycle but it is unlike photosynthesis because it occurs in the decomposers, plants and animals. The respiration process also produces carbon because the component of oxygen is used in breaking down organic compounds into the carbon dioxide gas and water. Through this process of respiration carbon atoms which start out as the compounds of carbon dioxide are absorbed through the body of human organism and then passed to the atmosphere ready for another recycling. degeneracy happens to be the major process through which carbon is passed to the atmosphere in form of carbon dioxide. This is achieved through the use of decomposers (micro-organisms) which are mainly found in soil and water. These decomposers usually take in dead and waste products which are mainly found in form of rotting remains of animals and plants. At the like time they release carbon dioxide through the process of respiration. As earlier stated, weathering of rocks is the other process through which carbon atoms are released. For example the lime rock (an ocean floor stone formed by marine plankton shells) traps many carbon atoms. These carbon atoms are released sometimes after a million years when the ocean waters recede and the lime rock becomes exposed.Scientifically, its noted that when a lime rock is set out to the natural process of weathering it releases the already pin down atoms becomes a very active part of the carbon cycle once. Human activities/processes also attach the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. One of these activities is the combustion of the fossils fuels. Due to the quick expansion of industrial revolution many people have been animated the fuels which contain oil and coal to power their engines. The constant production of these fuels has resulted into huge amounts of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Most of the carbon dioxide produced by the combustion of these fuels is however absorbed by plants, oceans and soils thus reducing the increasing effects of global warming (Scienceclarified.com 1).The human activities that influence the carbon cycleHuman activities have greatly interfered with the processes involved in the carbon cycle. An example of these human activities is disforestation. Deforestation is the removal of natural occurring forests through acetous and burning of trees in any forested area. People cut trees to use them as fuel, to use the land for pasture, farming and to build settlements. Active deforestation means that there will be no trees which emit oxygen while consuming carbon components (carbon dioxide). This leads to increased carbon dioxide than its consumed thus destroying the carbon cycle. The increase in carbon components in the air results into global warming (excessive heating o the earths and oc eans surface). This excessive heating results into dried rivers or decreased volumes of water in the earths surface because the hydrological cycle will be affected by higher rates of precipitation (Miller 217).According to White (1203), the ecologies have greatly been changed by overgrazing, terracing, irrigation and the cutting of trees. For example he says that the Romans used to cut trees to build ships which were used to fight Carthaginians. He also states that the banks on the lower parts of the river Nile are now a human artifact instead of the African jungle which nature could have created instead of man. He also talks of historic ecological change which has been caused by the uncouth invention. Farming prompts deforestation because there must be cutting down of trees to create more space for farming. This ecological change will be contributed by the increase of carbon components in the air since the forest cover is not available. The green house kind of farming is one of th e major agricultural contributors to the disruption of the carbon cycle. This is because the green houses emit gases which are not utilized thus bringing about global warming. Some of the gases emitted include the form of carbon referred to as chlorofluorocarbons. It therefore transpires that the amount of the carbon produced is higher than the amounts consumed.Another human activity which has contributed immensely to the disruption of the carbon cycle is the combustion of fuels. This is because of the increased burning of fuels emits huge amounts of carbon components. This will lead to greater volumes of carbon dioxide in the air which will not be consumed thus making the carbon cycle in effective. White (1204) states that by 1925, London had experienced a smog problem which was caused by the continuous burning of soft coal. He also suggests that the up-to-date combustion of fossil fuels is high up to the point of threatening to change the worlds atmosphere as a whole. White also suggests that war was another human activity which resulted in to ecological changes including the disruption of the carbon cycle. He asserts that the first cannon were fired in the early 14th century and this affected the environmental science because workers were forced to the forests and mountains to scramble for more, sulfur, potash, iron ore and charcoal where by some resulted into erosion and deforestation. He also warns that a war fought with hydrogen bombs can alter the genetic science of life. For example it will affect the processes of the carbon cycle between human beings and plants.According to Mackenzie (1), fishing and whaling activities will affect the global carbon cycle. This is because the continuous removal of the marine biota has resulted into increased atmospheric carbon dioxide. She also suggests that the rise of carbon dioxide or carbon has been caused by progressive fishing which has caused biomass depletion of the worlds ocean. Nowadays, the marine product ivity is now relatively lower than it used to be when there was a maintained carbon balance in the ocean-atmosphere. Another form of human activities which have influenced the flow of the carbon cycle is air conditioning and refrigeration. This is because they utilize the carbon available in the air which is in form of chlorofluorocarbon thus inhibiting the persistency of carbon cycle between plants and animals. These human activities are however very important in the world because they reduce the effects of global warming by absorbing the extra carbon available in the air. Another human activity that has influenced the carbon cycle is the conversion of loco lands and agricultural lands into settlements. These human settlements are the major contributors to the increased emissions of the global carbon dioxide. They affect the carbon cycle through the direct emissions of the carbon dioxide resulting from combustion of fuels, the alterations of the plant and carbon cycles during the conversion of wild lands to urban and residential land cover and the indirect effects of urban and residential land cover on energy use ecosystem carbon cycling. In human settlements the soil carbon is lost through the soil disturbances caused by the conversion from natural to urban or sub-urban land cover type. The conversion of hearty settled and managed land cover into human settlements results into higher rates of carbon sequestration and storage due to large inputs of fertilizer, water and organic matter (Pataki et al 1).Works citedCarbon cycle Science clarified. The Hopeless Battle :: Racism United States History Black Essays
The Hopeless Battle A courtroom is supposed to be a place of equal ground, where a person of any race, gender, or religion receives fair treatment under the law, and everyone is innocent until proven guilty by a jury of their peers. This has not always been the case, even though it was always been in the constitution. The 1930s was the beginning of the Great Depression. Most people were poor and couldnt recall work. The economy was terrible all over the world. During this period, the country was preoccupied, and little was done to help the dim people receive the rights and treatment that they deserved. It was impossible for a black man in atomic number 13 to receive a fair trial during the 1930s. A black man didnt stand a chance of amiable a court case against a white person because, Alabama was one of the most prejudice states in the country, the white people in Alabama during this period of time were still prejudice, and people resisted any change that would allow a black man much power. They also believed that black people were economy class to white people. To begin with, if a black man was on trial, the location of the courthouse played a major part in the verdict. The southern states were much more prejudice than the northern states. The majority of the southern states fought for slavery in the Civil War. Even in the 1930s, southern states refused to follow orders from the White House on how blacks were to be treated. Alabama and Mississippi, without much question, have been the most consistent centers of opposition to racial change, while Georgia, Louisiana, and South Carolina have been relatively less conservative. There has been no deficit of strong segregationists in the latter states, but militants have not dominated electoral politics to the same extent that they have in Mississippi and Alabama. (Black 105) A black man didnt have much of a chance of winning a case against a white ma n anywhere, but this was in particular true in the states of Alabama and Mississippi.
Comparing Albert Camus The Stranger (The Outsider) and Jean-Paul Sartr
Lack of Order in Albert Camus The Stranger (The Outsider) and Jean-Paul Sartres Nausea Nausea, by Jean-Paul Sartre, and The Stranger, by Albert Camus, refuse to impose coiffe on their events by not using psychological science, hierarchies, coherent muniments, or cause and effect. Nausea refuses to order its events by not inscribing them with psychology or a cause for existence, and it contrasts itself with a text by Balzac that explains its events. Nausea resists the traditional strategy of including the past to predict a characters future. It instead focuses on the chronological succession of presents, which troubles social constructions such as stories and adventure. The Stranger resists traditional categories of order by not dividing Meursaults body and soul, or body and mind. It denies the order of cause and effect by providing no motive for the send off of the Arab, and resists a reductive reading of itself as a case history of a monster. The novel contrasts its refusal to interpret with the coherent narrative that the prosecutors create. The Stranger and Nausea explore similar strategies as they interrogate ways to view the world without a system of interpretative illusions. Nausea refuses to assign order to its events by choosing not to justify them with psychology or cause. Roquentin finds himself unable to pick up a piece of reputation, for no apparent physical reason. However, he refuses to treat the event. He writes that he will not traffic in secrets or soul states, or to play with the inner life (9). When he cannot pick up the paper, he decides that no explanation is necessary he simply decides I was unable (10). By not assigning psychology, Roquentin allows the event to have a unmerited existence. Similarly, ... ...contrasts itself with an inner text that uses interpretation to assign order to the events of the world. Nausea contrasts its denial of cause and psychology with the section from Eugenie Grandet, and The Stranger contrasts its refusal to assign a cause to the murder with the prosecutors coherent narrative. They both incorporate gratuitous events, and refuse to supply an interpretation for them. Roquentin refuses to explain why he is unable to pick up the piece of paper in Nausea, and Meursault finds no means, or necessity, to interpret his murder of the Arab in The Stranger. Both novels explore ways to view the world without reducing it into a comforting provided illusory system of order. Works CitedCamus, Albert. The Stranger, trans. Mathew Ward. Kate Chopins Unorthodox Awakening :: Chopin Awakening Essays
Kate Chopins Unorthodox Awakening         The Awakening, written by Kate Chopin, was a book that was rattling aheadof its time. The author of the book was truly a genius in her right, but yet shewas seen as a scoundrel. At the time, it was a world that value only herperformance as a mother, whose highest expectations for women are self sacrificeand self-effacement. ( ? ) The people of that date of reference were not ready to admit oraccept the transparent but hidden feelings of intimacy or sexuality and the truenature of womanhood. Kate Chopins book portrayed a woman of that time in a quite unorthodox way. In fact, When she wrote the book in 1899, she achieved what was to prove her literary masterpiece and her ultimate break withpopular taste ( Cully, Intro. )         That book was written in 1899. During this era women were seen as veryproper and sophisticated individuals who were considered caretakers of the home. They wore an excessive amount of clothing and never exposed themselves in publicor otherwise. If a woman was caught exposing herself in public, would be shunnedand looked down upon. Loyalty and commitment to the family was very importantduring this time. Regardless of their family problems, they were expected toendure and stay faithful. In fact, the nineteenth centurys message of thesupremacy of maternity was so strong and so intense that it was absorbed intothe systems of its women - even women like Edna ,a character in Chopins book, who were not maternally inclined. ( ? ) You could almost say that women wereconsidered symbols of everything that is pure in the society in which they lived.Anything short of that was considered unacceptable.         Because of the time that Chopin lived in The Appearance in print ofher most recent work had brought her harsh tyroism and condemnation, as come upas ostracism from many of those who had always formed a close-knit world of St.Louis society ( Cully , vii ).  Her book was seen as a vile  and fouledpiece of literature. One critic of that time stated One cannot refrain fromregret that so beautiful a style and so much goal of taste have been spentby Miss Chopin on an essentially vulgar story.( ? ). Most critics and readersof that era felt the same way as this critic did. People were not willing to putup with what they felt was a trashy novel.
