Difference between Romantic and Modern Painting Essay
Difference between Romantic and Modern Painting - Essay Example The essay "Difference between Romantic and Modern Painting" discovers the Romantic and Modern Painting. Picasso was one of the artist who developed the kind of painting called abstract. In this style of painting, only selected qualities or characteristics of the subjects are used in the finished picture. the still life of a pitcher, candle and handled box on a table top rendered in rust orange, brown, blue, yellow, off-white, gray and black. Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, a member of an artists group known as Die Brucke. They valued truthfulness more than clever techniques and in fact they often used deliberately rough ways of working, as if that were a proof of the strength of their Feelings. The group works on watercolors, drawings and woodcuts. Kirchner and the group can be measured by their extraordinary production. The rapid development of their personal styles was a result of their activity, including life, drawing and painting as well as the production of woodcuts, lithographs and dra wings. Romantic Painters Theodore Rousseau (1812-1867) Rousseau is best known for turning themes of humanity's relations into nature. Some of this most famous works include: Springtime, Under the Birches, and Clearing in the Forest near Fontainebleau. Rousseau's paintings as embodiments of a new way of seeing the world, a new sense of the deep interconnectedness between the human and natural worlds that coincided with the earliest formulations of modern ecological thought. These techniques were very prevalent in Rousseau's art. Rousseau paints the solitary oak dominating a flat patch of pastureland. He sees the peculiar ragged cha racteristics of the gnarled branches, the coarse density of the oak foliage, the tufts, and clouds of the turf with pools of standing water like glass reflecting the sky. The grand compositions of this landscape are replaced by others that express the spontaneous and informal aspects of nature. This nature lover painter, saw the landscape in its quiet moods with fresh nave eyes. Cropsey and Hudson River School Despite a tendency toward harshness of colors, did notable paintings. Sunset, Hudson River is a rather odd marriage of a formulaic Hudson River School composition and this luminist style. In most luminist works the sunlight is evident only in the diffusing effects of its rays, but in this painting the setting sun is a palpable orb. One feels as if the strength of its light could not only diffuse

American Industrial Revolution Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Essay
American Industrial Revolution Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania - Essay Example These factors all allowed Pittsburgh to become the major American city contributing to the Industrial Revolution, and Pittsburgh's connections with the rest of the United States helped to spawn the Industrial Revolution in other parts of the country. In order to understand why Pittsburgh was such a key player in America's Industrial Revolution, one must trace the city's boom back to the start of the Industrial Revolution within the city's own boundaries. The start of the Industrial Revolution in Pittsburgh can be traced all the way back to the start of the nineteenth century. The low cost of coke, and iron, alongside the large amount of coal found near Pittsburgh contributed to the development of the iron industry within the city, and later, within America (Bernal, 1970, p. 83). Most of the iron production during this time period used charcoal as a source of fuel. However, the discovery of the abundance of minerals around Pittsburgh introduced a new and better way to produce iron. This occurred mainly because coal can create a higher temperature, and is thus more effective for burning in comparison to charcoal. Furthermore, the coal found outside of Pittsburgh was excellent in quality, and was vary abundant (Derry and Williams, 1993, p. 94). For example, coal seams were discovered to be at least four to ten feet in thickness outside the city, and when compared to London, Pittsburgh's coal turned out to be of better quality, more abundant, and most importantly, more profitable. The early production of iron nails, balls, and different farm tools began to occur, and eventually these products were widely available to the public. In 1812, Pittsburgh developed the first iron rolling mill, using the development of the steam engine. This first mill spawned many other mills using steam engine power, and the city grew as a result (Hannegan, 2000, p. 23). By 1815, Pittsburgh could be called the biggest city in the east. This advancement in iron technology in the city opened the door to allowing Pittsburgh to become a major city within the Industrial Revolution. Obviously having better quality coal than London, which was at the heart of the Western Industrial Revolution, is an early indicator of how important Pittsbur gh was becoming to the rest of the United States. The coal developments in Pittsburgh inspired the rest of the United States to revise its approach to goal development. After the development of the iron mills came the development of glass factories, pottery mills, breweries, grist mills, nail mills, steam engine factories, cotton factors, and printing offices. The glass factories were yet another important development to the Industrial Revolution and the rest of the United States. Not surprsingly, plate glass saw very limited residential use in the 1800's. In Boston some of the wealthiest people had begun to use polished plate glass instead of sheet glass in their front windows before 1850. In 1897 the Marsh Plate Glass Company developed a continuous lehr (oven) for annealing plate glass, reducing the carefully controlled cooling time from three days to three hours. Improving Health and Wellness in Students Essay Example for Free
Improving Health and Wellness in Students Essay Rising consumerism is a problem that has a profound effect on children today.à Children and adults watch television and are inundated with commercials that urge viewers to buy the latest technological gadgets that replace outdoor activities and exercise.à As well, the latest candy, ice cream, and other unhealthy products are cast in between cartoons that capture childrenââ¬â¢s attentions and their parents are pressured to please their children and buy them material objects to satisfy them rather than engaging them in healthy activities and studying much of the time. Many parents are working and have little time to spend with their kids, sitting in front of the television together or encouraging kids to quietly play with their gadgets (play stations, computers, and others), so parents can relax may become the norm.à To make up for this lack of involvement many parents guiltily give in to childrenââ¬â¢s whims and buy them candy and unhealthy food, to save time ââ¬Å"fast-foodâ⬠replaces a healthy dinner and that much needed time at the dinner table to interact and be involved in their childrens lives. An efficient school program would not only target the youth, but their parents, as well then.à ââ¬Å"Operation Pause the PlayStationâ⬠will be aimed at educating parents and children separately on issues involving obesity and other unhealthy behaviors.à It is probable that parents of children, who are not obese, will be less receptive and unlikely to come to these after-school classes. But, it is postulated this involvement program will be less receptive if it were labeled as a program for troubled kids.à Therefore this program will have the contingency that children will not be able to pass to the next grade level unless parents attend (this is fitting as the program should be implemented at the end of the school year before children have summer break and may be more sedentary and involved in unhealthy activities without the benefit of healthy school lunches and physical education). Therefore, parents and children should attend at least three classes that tackle these problems.à Class one should tackle the ââ¬Å"McDonaldization of Societyâ⬠and demonstrate that busy working families do not mean to do their children harm when settling for fast food, but that fast food is unhealthy and can lead to obesity and/or unhealthy learned behaviors that will follow children into adulthood. ââ¬Å"Giving inâ⬠to children and buying them unhealthy food to fill the void that is left from lack of quality time, should also be addressed.à Most importantly, the lack of parental involvement in school activities due to rushed lifestyles should be addressed.à This class will be a sort of forum, as well, not meant to single out any parent, but an opportunity for parents facing the same kinds of strain to network with one another and see that they can be part of a healthy solution. Class two should encompass the overuse of technical gadgets (including television) that interfere with healthy activity.à Teachers of these classes that can be taken from high school level health classes and may choose films or other forms of media that deal with these issues to show that, in a sense, these parents and their families are ââ¬Å"victimsâ⬠of consumerism. Outside of class, more and more children are watching more and more TV, to the point that they are watching approximately 40,000 TV commercials annually. (The CEO of Prism Communication notes, ââ¬Å"They arenââ¬â¢t children as much as what I like to call ââ¬Ëevolving consumersââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ (Heiner, 2006). Deconstructing these facts that lead to sedentary and possibly unhealthy behaviors in children from a larger, systemic base will, also, help parents to realize that they are not being singled out, but instead part of a consumer culture that demands this type of behavior. While the parents are involved in the first two classes, high school level physical education and health teachers should teach the children about food pyramid and what different foods do to help the body grow and be strong.à They should, also, focus on different exercise techniques that are fun and help to keep children in shape.à The two courses should help children to begin to think beyond McDonaldââ¬â¢s and PlayStation and the children will take what they learn and teach their parents. This is what class three should be revolving around, a fun and light-hearted end to the requirement.à Here students will tech their parents what they have learned as far as healthy eating and a better overall lifestyle.à The parents will, most likely, appreciate that their children are making an effort to improve their lifestyles and will continue where the classes left off.à Additionally, there should be representatives from various summer camps and programs that are inexpensive , so that even children in poverty could attend.à The YMCA, Boys and Girls Club, and other organizations should promote what they have to offer at this time and, hopefully the summer will serve as a break from studies, but a beginning to more healthy behavior. In conclusion, problems with obesity and unhealthy behavior are systemic.à We live in a consumer culture that causes both the old and young to sometimes believe that having ââ¬Å"thingsâ⬠is essential.à Hurried lifestyles, as well, from long work hours, and especially in single-parent households may lead to turning to ââ¬Å"fast foodâ⬠and a lesser interest in school activities.à Competing with friends to have the most up-to-date technology may lead to parents having pressure put on them to provide these unnecessary gadgets and relaxing may start to take the form of television watching or other technological time.à These problems are not unique to any one group, but all parents and all children are at risk.à ââ¬Å"Operation Pause the Playstationâ⬠, should help change attitudes on this. The Two Stories Of Creation That Begin Genesis Religion Essay
The Two Stories Of Creation That Begin Genesis Religion Essay According the creation of genesis there two stories that differ from the other, but at the same time both of them have similarities .Genesis is the first book of the book which provokes conflict about creation of Earth. The first story of Genesis is introduced to Ps vision and how the creation was. Throughout this story, God human creation was in the six day; also God created humans by his own image. In the other side there is the second story of Genesis which represents the Js vision of creation, based on this story human have different origin from the first story. In Genesis II God did not created man by his own image, it was created of the dust of the ground(Genesis 2:7). Comparing both stories there is a huge difference of power between the two Gods. Moreover these two creations show evidence in different styles of writing and have conflict with it. Both versions of Genesis have been contrasted, in the first story of Genesis, the order of creation differ from Genesis II. In Genesis I the heaven was first, then came animals, and finally was the man. But in the other hand, Genesis II human was placed on Earth before the animals and nature.(genesis 1:1, genesis 2.1) After those different versions is really difficult to understand the truth of Gods creation. In comparison between these stories is that God created the Earth like human kind, but in different ways. The most important similarity is that God shows humans complete love and adornment and only gives them one strict measure not eat from the Tree of Knowledge in the Garden of Eden. But they do not obey him, and they eat from it anyway. Before the mankind comes, Genesis I have a lot of events such as firmament, waters, plants and animals. Meanwhile, in Genesis two the preparation for mans home was really emphatic and special planning upon human. There different emphases in the two storiesà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ¦., but the reason for these is obvious. Genesis I continue the narrative of creation until the climax, namely, man made in the image and likeliness of God. In Genesis II gives certain added details about mans original condition, which would have been incongruous and out of place in the grand, declarative in Genesis I(Edward J. Young, 1960).Therefore in Genesis II the center of this creation was human, it involves his setting and how perfect God created him. And at the same time in Genesis II there is no mention of creation of Earth and Oceans. There is no allusion to the sun, moon. The main purpose of this creation is to show how man was developing around the Earth. In contrast Genesis I explain us a general conclusion of this creation that have lastly a human without any details that involves him. Therefore, it show a man which was created without any main goal, this story basically describe an important care of environment as plants and nature. Moreover, Genesis I the creation of human takes place on the sixth day and is as follows, And God said, Let us make man in our image, in our likeness. As a result God created man in his image and also male and female.(Genesis 1:26) Be fertile an increase, fill the Earth and master it. The story of Adam and Eve portrays them as the two characters that did not have enough understanding of the effects of disobedience would bring to their lives and their next generations. In comparison, there is another similarity is that in the first account, there was a pre-existing watery chaos. The ocean was already present and a wind moved across the surface. The seas rested on the dry land , which appeared on day 3 when God gathered the waters together.(Genesis 1:1 to 2:4). The second story says that there was pre-existing dry land.AT first God created Adam, and then began to create all other living things. As a result God before created human being, he had made the water around the world. In version Ps God was the creator, there was no mention of laws and redeeming, how this God had made everything and was omniscient. This contrast from the Ps vision God, the evidence of this is found in Genesis II , where J explain, You shall no eat from it and you shall not touch it, lest you died. (Genesis 3:3) In this case it is referring to the tree of Knowledge, in the Garden of Eden. This shows evidence that Js God was the lawgiver and judgment giver. When comparing this to Ps God, we can observe that Js God was not as all knowledge. In Js vision found this disobedience from Adam and Eve, thats why he started the judgment. It is in this aspect that Js God is not omniscient. Another big contrast as we can see in Genesis II, God require materials to make Earth. This is opposed to how God is making Earth in Genesis I. in genesis I, the earth could bring forth vegetation, in Genesis II, there is no vegetation without rain and tillage of the ground by man; God has plant the first garden himself (Wybrow, 138) So, it demonstrates the difference in the Earth process to be set up. Furthermore, another difference is that in genesis I God doesnt have a very clear characterization because God was more a powerful and omniscient being. While in Genesis II God was less powerful, simply because it could not just imagine something into creation. The best way to reconcile the accounts was to assume that in the six days of creation, God created the potential for everything that unfolded, so that the potentiality for humanity was created on the sixth day, and this potentiality then became actual when activated by the breath of God. So it avoids contradictions between the two stories. It is a really interesting text which could be connected with the evolution.(Augustine of Hippo). Therefore in real life both stories are based with a same purpose, created the man and environment around him, but both creations did it at his own style. In conclusion, to me understand in Genesis I and Genesis II there are great comparisons and differences about the creation. Genesis I was written by the author P who is known as Priestly writer. Genesis II was written by the author J. I believe that Genesis I and II are very important to have an argument to discuss and analyze the creation of the earth and men.

Comparing Tradition and Change in Amy Tans The Kitchen Gods Wife and
Tradition and Change in The Kitchen God's Wife and The Joy Luck Clubà à à à à à à à à à à à à Throughout the novels The Kitchen God's Wife and The Joy Luck Club, author Amy Tan conveys the message of tradition and change. Each novel contains sections about mothers talking and relating their stories to their daughters. The daughters in The Joy Luck Club hear stories about loss and happiness, and joy and hate. Each of the four mothers tell these stories to their daughters as lessons, or offerings for their futures. They tell the stories to show how lucky their daughters have been, yet how their lives will never be the same as their own lives have been. They try to help their daughters on some level with these stories. Yet they comprehend the fact that they could never understand their mothers. The main character, Pearl, in The Kitchen God's Wife talks about her life and her mother. Pearl, and her mother Winnie, the other half of the mother/daughter pair attend a funeral as Pearl narrates. They then go to Winnie's home, as Winnie dotes on Pearl and her two daughters . Pearl's heart breaks as she notices all the small intricacies of her mother, and all the little things that her mother does to illustrate her love. As Pearl and her family drive away from her mother's house, Winnie begins to narrate, to her daughter about her life, her hardships, and her loves. Through these two novels, the five mother/daughter pairs and the perception of mother to daughter, the theme of mother daughter relationships is distinctly portrayed. Pearl views her mother in many different ways. Often, through her mother's movements, or appearance, she will view her mother as fragile, yet strong and knowing, "...I imagine my mother's parchment like skin, furious... ...ire. "Amy Tan." The Atkins Diet as Treatment for Children with Epilepsy :: Exploratory Essays Research Papers
The Atkins Diet as Treatment for Children with Epilepsy à à à à à à à à Eric H. Kossoff and other scientists at the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions published the article ââ¬Å"Efficacy of the Atkins diet as therapy for intractable epilepsyâ⬠which describes their experiment using the Atkins diet as therapy to reduce the number of seizures for children with epilepsy. Along with a variety of medications, the Ketogenic diet is also used as therapy to help epileptic patients control their seizures. The Ketogenic diet is similar to starvation in a sense that it only allows patients to consume an approximate of 1,500 calories a day, which is 25% less than the recommended daily allowance of 2,000 calories. Patients that use the Ketogenic diet consume a high fat, moderate protein, and low carbohydrate diet to induce a medical condition called ketosis. This condition is caused when the body does not have enough carbohydrates to complete the metabolism of fat leaving ketone bodies and it is believed that ketosis is responsible for controlling the seizures from occurring so frequently. The Atkins diet is much more flexible restricting only carbohydrates and allowing unlimited consumption of fats, proteins, and calories; therefore inducing the same medical condition, ketosis. Since both types of diet produces the same ketotic state and serves the same function to reduce the frequency of seizures, Kossoff and the other scientist hopes that the Atkins diet can be used as an alternative than the Ketogenic diet for children with epilepsy. à à à à à à à à Four patients under the age of 18 were involved in the experiment conducted by Kossoff and other scientists at John Hopkins to test if the Atkins diet can be used as a substitute instead of the Ketogenic diet to stimulate ketosis. In order to help all the patient transit smoothly the scientists did not change any of the medications that the patients were already on for the first two months. To assess the difference between the Ketogenic diet and the Atkins diet, scientists recorded the weight and
Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ’s Childhood Pal Chapter 13
Chapter 13 ââ¬Å"I could kick that punk's punk ass,â⬠the angel said, jumping on the bed, shaking a fist at the television screen. ââ¬Å"Raziel,â⬠I said, ââ¬Å"you are an angel of the Lord, he is a professional wrestler, I think it's understood that you could kick his punk ass.â⬠This has gone on for a couple of days now. The angel has found a new passion. The front desk has called a dozen times and sent a bellman up twice to tell the angel to quiet down. ââ¬Å"Besides, it's just pretend.â⬠Raziel looked at me as if I had slapped him. ââ¬Å"Don't start with that again, these are not actors.â⬠The angel back flipped on the bed. ââ¬Å"Ooo, ooo, you see that? Ho popped him with a chair. Thaz right, you go girl. She nasty.â⬠It's like that now. Talk shows featuring the screaming ignorant, soap operas, and wrestling. And the angel guards the remote control like it's the Ark of the Covenant. ââ¬Å"This,â⬠I told him, ââ¬Å"is why the angels were never given free will. This right here. Because you would spend your time watching this.â⬠ââ¬Å"Really?â⬠Raziel said, and he muted the TV for what seemed like the first time in days. ââ¬Å"Then tell me, Levi who is called Biff, if by watching this I am abusing the little freedom I've been given while carrying out this task, then what would you say of your people?â⬠ââ¬Å"By my people you mean human beings?â⬠I was stalling. I didn't remember the angel ever making a valid point before and I wasn't prepared for it. ââ¬Å"Hey, don't blame me, I've been dead for two thousand years. I wouldn't have let this sort of thing happen.â⬠ââ¬Å"Uh-huh,â⬠said the angel, crossing his arms and striking a pose of incredulity that he had learned from a gangster rapper on MTV. If there was anything I learned from John the Baptist, it was that the sooner you confess a mistake, the quicker you can get on to making new and better mistakes. Oh, that and don't piss off Salome, that was a big one too. ââ¬Å"Okay, we've fucked up,â⬠I said. ââ¬Å"Thaz whut I'm talkin' about,â⬠said the angel, entirely too satisfied with himself. Yeah? Where was he when we needed him and his sword of justice at Balthasar's fortress? Probably in Greece, watching wrestling. Meanwhile, when we got to the library, Balthasar was sitting before the heavy dragon table, eating a bit of cheese and sipping wine while Tunnels and Pea Pods poured a sticky yellow wax on his bald head, then spread it around with small wooden paddles. The easels and slates from my lessons had been stacked out of the way against the shelves full of scrolls and codices. ââ¬Å"You look good blue,â⬠Balthasar said. ââ¬Å"Yeah, everybody says that.â⬠The paint, once set, didn't wash off, but at least my skin had stopped itching. ââ¬Å"Come in, sit. Have wine. They brought cheese from Kabul this morning. Try some.â⬠Joshua and I sat in chairs across the table from the magus. Josh, completely true to form, disregarded my advice and asked Balthasar outright about the iron door. The aspect of the jolly wizard became suddenly grave. ââ¬Å"There are some mysteries one must learn to live with. Did not your own God tell Moses that no one must look upon his face, and the prophet accepted that? So you must accept that you cannot know what is in the room with the iron door.â⬠ââ¬Å"He knows his Torah, and Prophets and Writings too,â⬠Joshua said to me. ââ¬Å"Balthasar knows more about Solomon than any of the rabbis or priests in Israel.â⬠ââ¬Å"That's swell, Josh.â⬠I handed him a hunk of cheese to keep him amused. To Balthasar I said, ââ¬Å"But you forget God's butt.â⬠You don't hang out with the Messiah for most of your life without picking up a little Torah knowledge yourself. ââ¬Å"What?â⬠said the magus. Just then the girls grabbed the edges of the hardened wax shell they'd made on Balthasar's head and ripped it off in one swift movement. ââ¬Å"Ouch, you vicious harpies! Can't you warn me when you're going to do that? Get out.â⬠The girls tittered and hid their satisfied grins behind delicate fans painted with pheasants and plum blossoms. They fled the library leaving a trail of girlish laughter in the hall as they passed. ââ¬Å"Isn't there an easier way to do that?â⬠asked Joshua. Balthasar scowled at him. ââ¬Å"Don't you think that after two hundred years, if there was an easier way to do it I would have found it?â⬠Joshua dropped his cheese. ââ¬Å"Two hundred years?â⬠I chimed in. ââ¬Å"You get a hairstyle you like, stick with it. Not that you could call that hair, per se.â⬠Balthasar wasn't amused. ââ¬Å"What's this about God's butt?â⬠ââ¬Å"Or that you could call that style, for that matter,â⬠I added, rising and going to a copy of the Torah that I'd seen on the shelves. Fortunately it was a codex ââ¬â like a modern book ââ¬â otherwise I'd have been unwinding a scroll for twenty minutes and the drama would have been lost. I quickly flipped to Exodus. ââ¬Å"Right, here's the part you were talking about. ââ¬ËAnd he said, Thou canst not see my face: for there shall no man see me, and live.' Right? Well, then God puts his hand over Moses as he passes, but he says, ââ¬ËI will take away mine hand, and thou shalt see my back parts: but my face shall not be seen.'â⬠ââ¬Å"So?â⬠said Balthasar. ââ¬Å"So, God let Moses see his butt, so using your example, you owe us God's butt. So tell us, what's going on with that room with the iron door?â⬠Brilliant. I paused and studied the blueness of my fingernails while savoring my victory. ââ¬Å"That's the silliest thing I've ever heard,â⬠said Balthasar. His momentary loss of composure was replaced by the calm and slightly amused attitude of the master. ââ¬Å"What if I told you that it is dangerous for you to know about what is behind that iron door now, but once you have training, you will not only know, but you will gain great power from the knowledge? When I think you are ready, I promise to show you what is behind that door. But you must promise to study and learn your lessons. Can you do that?â⬠ââ¬Å"Are you forbidding us to ask questions?â⬠asked Joshua. ââ¬Å"Oh no, I'm simply denying you some of the answers for the time being. And trust me, time is the one thing that I have plenty of.â⬠Joshua turned to me. ââ¬Å"I still don't know what I am supposed to learn here, but I'm sure I haven't learned it yet.â⬠He was pleading me with his eyes to not push the issue. I decided to let it drop; besides, I didn't relish the idea of being poisoned again. ââ¬Å"How long is this going to take?â⬠I asked. ââ¬Å"These lessons, I mean?â⬠ââ¬Å"Some students take many years to learn the nature of Chi. You will be provided for while you are here.â⬠ââ¬Å"Years? Can we think about it?â⬠ââ¬Å"Take as long as you like,â⬠Balthasar stood. ââ¬Å"Now I must go to the girls' quarters. They like to rub their naked breasts over my scalp right after it's been waxed and is at its smoothest.â⬠I gulped. Joshua grinned and looked at the table in front of him. I often wondered, not just then, but most of the time, if Joshua had the ability to turn off his imagination when he needed to. He must have. Otherwise I don't know how he would have ever triumphed over temptation. I, on the other hand, was a slave to my imagination and it was running wild with the image of Balthasar's scalp massage. ââ¬Å"We'll stay. We'll learn. We'll do what is needed,â⬠I said. Joshua burst out laughing, then calmed himself enough to speak. ââ¬Å"Yes, we will stay and learn, Balthasar, but first I have to go to Kabul and finish some business.â⬠ââ¬Å"Of course you do,â⬠said Balthasar. ââ¬Å"You can leave tomorrow. I'll have one of the girls show you the way, but for now, I must say good night.â⬠The wizard stalked off, leaving Joshua to collapse into a fit of giggles and me to wonder how I might look with my head shaved. In the morning Joy came to our rooms wearing the garb of a desert trader: a loose tunic, soft leather boots, and pantaloons. Her hair was tied up under a turban and she carried a long riding crop in her hand. She led us through a long narrow passageway that went deep into the mountain, then emerged out of the side of a sheer cliff. We climbed a rope ladder to the top of the plateau where Pillows and Sue waited with three camels saddled and outfitted for a short journey. There was a small farm on the plateau, with several pens full of chickens, some goats, and a few pigs in a pen. ââ¬Å"We're going to have a tough time getting these camels down that ladder,â⬠I said. Joy scowled and wrapped the tail of her turban around her face so that only her eyes showed. ââ¬Å"There's a path down,â⬠she said. Then she tapped her camel on the shoulder with her crop and rode off, leaving Joshua and me to scramble onto our animals and follow. The road down from the plateau was just wide enough for a single camel to sway his way down without falling, but once down on the desert floor, much like the entrance to the canyon where the fortress's entrance lay, if you didn't know it was there, you would never have found it. An added measure of security for a fortress that had no guards, I thought. Joshua and I tried to engage Joy in conversation several times during the journey to Kabul, but she was cranky and abrupt and often just rode away from us. ââ¬Å"Probably depressed that she's not torturing me,â⬠I speculated. ââ¬Å"I can see how that might bring her down,â⬠said Joshua. ââ¬Å"Maybe if you could get your camel to bite you. I know that always brightens my mood.â⬠I rode on ahead without another word. It's wildly irritating to have invented something as revolutionary as sarcasm, only to have it abused by amateurs. Once in Kabul, Joy led the search for the blinded guard by asking every blind beggar that we passed in the marketplace. ââ¬Å"Have you seen a blind bowman who arrived by camel caravan a little more than a week ago?â⬠Joshua and I trailed several steps behind her, trying desperately to keep from grinning whenever she looked back. Joshua had wanted to point out the flaw in Joy's method, while I, on the other hand, wanted to savor her doofuscosity as passive revenge for having been poisoned. There was none of the competence and self-assured nature she showed at the fortress. She was clearly out of her element and I was enjoying it. ââ¬Å"You see,â⬠I explained to Joshua, ââ¬Å"what Joy is doing is ironic, yet that's not her intent. That's the difference between irony and sarcasm. Irony can be spontaneous, while sarcasm requires volition. You have to create sarcasm.â⬠ââ¬Å"No kidding?â⬠said Josh. ââ¬Å"Why do I waste my time with you?â⬠We indulged Joy's search for the blind man for another hour before directing her inquiries to the sighted, and to men from the camel caravans in particular. Once she started asking sighted people, it was a short time before we were directed to a temple where the blinded guard was said to have staked his begging territory. ââ¬Å"There he is,â⬠said Joshua, pointing to a ragged pile of human being beckoning to the worshipers as they moved in and out of the temple. ââ¬Å"It looks like things have been tough on him,â⬠I said, amazed that the guard, who had been one of the most vital (and frightening) men I'd ever seen, had been reduced to such a pathetic creature in so short a time. Then again, I was discounting the theatrics of it all. ââ¬Å"A great injustice has been done here,â⬠said Josh. He moved to the guard and gently put his hand on the blind man's shoulder. ââ¬Å"Brother, I am here to relieve your suffering.â⬠ââ¬Å"Pity on the blind,â⬠said the guard, waving around a wooden bowl. ââ¬Å"Calm now,â⬠said Joshua, placing his hand over the blind man's eyes. ââ¬Å"When I remove my hand you will see again.â⬠I could see the strain in Joshua's face as he concentrated on healing the guard. Tears trickled down his cheeks and dripped on the flagstones. I thought of how effortless his healings had been in Antioch, and realized that the strain was not coming from the healing, but from the guilt he carried for having blinded the man in the first place. When he removed his hand and stepped away, both he and the guard shivered. Joy stepped away from us and covered her face as if to ward off bad air. The guard stared into space just as he had while he had been begging, but his eyes were no longer white. ââ¬Å"Can you see?â⬠Joshua said. ââ¬Å"I can see, but everything is wrong. People's skin appears blue.â⬠ââ¬Å"No, he is blue. Remember, my friend Biff.â⬠ââ¬Å"Were you always blue?â⬠ââ¬Å"No, only recently.â⬠Then the guard seemed to see Joshua for the first time and his expression of wonderment was replaced by hatred. He leapt at Joshua, drawing a dagger from his rags as he moved. He would have split my friend's rib cage in a single swift blow if Joy hadn't swept his feet out from under him at the last second. Even so, he was up in an instant, going for a second attack. I managed to get my hand up in time to poke him in the eyes, just as Joy kicked him in the back of the neck, driving him to the ground in agony. ââ¬Å"My eyes!â⬠he cried. ââ¬Å"Sorry,â⬠I said. Joy kicked the knife out of the guard's reach. I put an arm around Joshua's chest and pushed him back. ââ¬Å"You need to put some distance between you and him before he can see again.â⬠ââ¬Å"But I only meant to help him,â⬠said Joshua. ââ¬Å"Blinding him was a mistake.â⬠ââ¬Å"Josh, he doesn't care. All he knows is that you are the enemy. All he knows is that he wants to destroy you.â⬠ââ¬Å"I don't know what I'm doing. Even when I try to do the right thing it goes wrong.â⬠ââ¬Å"We need to go,â⬠said Joy. She took one of Joshua's arms while I took the other and we led him away before the guard could gather his senses for another attack. Joy had a list of supplies that Balthasar wanted her to bring back to the fortress, so we spent some time tracking down large baskets of a mineral called cinnabar, from which we would extract quicksilver, as well as some spices and pigments. Joshua followed us through the market in a daze until we passed a merchant who was selling the black beans from which was made the dark drink we'd had in Antioch. ââ¬Å"Buy me some,â⬠Joshua said. ââ¬Å"Joy, buy me some of those.â⬠She did, and Joshua cradled the bag of beans like an infant all the way back to the fortress. We rode most of the way in silence, but when the sun had gone down and we were almost to the hidden road that led up to the plateau, Joy galloped up beside me. ââ¬Å"How did he do it?â⬠she asked. ââ¬Å"What?â⬠ââ¬Å"I saw him heal that man's eyes. How did he do it? I know many kinds of magic, but I saw no spells cast, no potions mixed.â⬠ââ¬Å"It's very powerful magic all right.â⬠I checked over my shoulder to see if Joshua was paying attention. He was hugging his coffee beans and mumbling to himself as he had for the whole trip. Praying, I presume. ââ¬Å"Tell me how it's done,â⬠Joy said. ââ¬Å"I asked Joshua, but he's just chanting and looking stunned.â⬠ââ¬Å"Well, I could tell you how it's done, but you have to tell me what's going on behind the ironclad door.â⬠ââ¬Å"I can't tell you that, but perhaps we can trade other things.â⬠She pulled the tail of her turban away from her face and smiled. She was stunningly beautiful in the moonlight, even in men's clothes. ââ¬Å"I know over a thousand ways to bring pleasure to a man, and that's only what I know personally. The other girls have as many tricks that they'd be willing to show you too.â⬠ââ¬Å"Yeah, but how is that useful to me? What do I need to know about pleasing a man?â⬠Joy ripped her turban off her head and smacked me across the back of the head with it, sending a small cloud of dust drifting into the night. ââ¬Å"You're stupid and you're blue and the next time I poison you I will be sure to use something without an antidote.â⬠Even the wise and inscrutable Joy could be goaded, I guess. I smiled. ââ¬Å"I will accept your paltry offerings,â⬠I said with as much pomposity as an adolescent boy can muster. ââ¬Å"And in return I will teach the greatest secret of our magic. A secret of my own invention. We call it sarcasm.â⬠ââ¬Å"Let's make coffee when we get home,â⬠said Joshua. It was some challenge to try to drag out the process of how Joshua had returned the guard's sight, especially since I hadn't the slightest idea myself, but through careful misdirection, obfuscation, subterfuge, guile, and complete balderdash, I was able to barter that lack of knowledge into months of outrageous knob polishing by the beauteous Joy and her comely minions. Somehow, the urgency of knowing what was behind the ironclad door and the answers to other enigmas of Balthasar's fortress abated, and I found myself quite content pursuing the lessons the wizard assigned me during the day, while stretching my imagination to its limit with the mathematical combinations of the night. There was the drawback that Balthasar would kill me if he knew that I was availing myself of the charms of his concubines, but is the pilfered fruit not sweetened by the stealing? Oh, to be young and in love (with eight Chinese concubines). Meanwhile Joshua took to his studies with characteristic zeal, fueled in no little bit by the coffee he drank every morning until he nearly vibrated through the floor with enthusiasm. ââ¬Å"Look at this, do you see, Biff? When asked, the master Confucius says, ââ¬ËRecompense injury with justice, and kindness with kindness.' Yet Lao-tzu says, ââ¬ËRecompense injury with kindness.' Don't you see?â⬠Joshua would dance around, scrolls trailing out behind him, hoping that somehow I would share his enthusiasm for the ancient texts. And I tried. I really did. ââ¬Å"No, I don't see. The Torah says, ââ¬Ëan eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth,' that is justice.â⬠ââ¬Å"Exactly,â⬠said Joshua. ââ¬Å"I think Lao-tzu is correct. Kindness precedes justice. As long as you seek justice by punishment you can only cause more suffering. How can that be right? This is a revelation!â⬠ââ¬Å"I learned how to boil down goat urine to make explosives today,â⬠I said. ââ¬Å"That's good too,â⬠said Joshua. It could happen like that any time of the day or night. Joshua would come blazing out of the library in the middle of the night, interrupt me in the midst of some complex oily tangle of Pea Pod and Pillows and Tunnels ââ¬â while Number Six familiarized us with the five hundred jade gods of various depths and textures ââ¬â and he'd avert his eyes just long enough for me to towel off before he'd shove some codex in my hand and force me to read a passage while he waxed enthusiastic on the thoughts of some long-dead sage. ââ¬Å"The Master says that ââ¬Ëthe superior man may indeed endure want, but the inferior man, when he experiences want, will give into unbridled excess.' He's talking about you, Biff. You're the inferior man.â⬠ââ¬Å"I'm so proud,â⬠I told him, as I watched Number Six forlornly pack her gods into the warmed brass case where they resided. ââ¬Å"Thank you for coming here to tell me that.â⬠I was given the task of learning waidan, which is the alchemy of the external. My knowledge would come from the manipulation of the physical elements. Joshua, on the other hand, was learning neidan, the alchemy of the internal. His knowledge would come from the study of his own inner nature through the contemplation of the masters. So while Joshua read scrolls and books, I spent my time mixing quicksilver and lead, phosphorous and brimstone, charcoal and philosopher's stone, trying somehow to divine the nature of the Tao. Joshua was learning to be the Messiah and I was learning to poison people and blow stuff up. The world seemed very much in order. I was happy, Joshua was happy, Balthasar was happy, and the girls ââ¬â well, the girls were busy. Although I passed the iron door every day (and the niggling voice persisted), what was behind it wasn't important to me, and neither were the answers to the dozen or so questions that Joshua and I should have put to our generous master. Before we knew it a year had passed, then two more, and we were celebrating the passage of Joshua's seventeenth birthday in the fortress. Balthasar had the girls prepare a feast of Chinese delicacies and we drank wine late into the night. (And long after that, and even when we had returned to Israel, we always ate Chinese food on Joshua's birthday. I'm told it became a tradition not only with those of us who knew Joshua, but with Jews everywhere.) ââ¬Å"Do you ever think of home?â⬠Joshua asked me the night of his birthday feast. ââ¬Å"Sometimes,â⬠I said. ââ¬Å"What do you think of?â⬠ââ¬Å"Maggie,â⬠I said. ââ¬Å"Sometimes my brothers. Sometimes my mother and father, but always Maggie.â⬠ââ¬Å"Even with all your experiences since, you still think of Maggie?â⬠Joshua had become less and less curious about the essence of lust. Initially I thought that his lack of interest had to do with the depth of his studies, but I then realized that his interest was fading along with the memory of Maggie. ââ¬Å"Joshua, my memory of Maggie isn't about what happened the night before we left. I didn't go to see her thinking that we would make love. A kiss was more than I expected. I think of Maggie because I made a place in my heart for her to live, and it's empty. It always will be. It always was. She loved you.â⬠ââ¬Å"I'm sorry, Biff. I don't know how to heal that. I would if I could.â⬠ââ¬Å"I know, Josh. I know.â⬠I didn't want to talk about home anymore, but Josh deserved to get off his chest whatever it was that was bothering him, and if not to me, to whom? ââ¬Å"Do you ever think of home?â⬠ââ¬Å"Yes. That's why I asked. You know, the girls were cooking bacon today, and that made me think of home.â⬠ââ¬Å"Why? I don't remember anyone ever cooking bacon at home.â⬠ââ¬Å"I know, but if we ate some bacon, no one at home would ever know.â⬠I got up and walked over to the half-wall that divided our rooms. There was moonlight coming through the window and Joshua's face had caught it and was glowing in that annoying way that it sometimes did. ââ¬Å"Joshua, you're the Son of God. You're the Messiah. That implies ââ¬â oh, I don't know ââ¬â that you're a Jew! You can't eat bacon.â⬠ââ¬Å"God doesn't care if we eat bacon. I can just feel it.â⬠ââ¬Å"Really. He still feel the same way about fornication?â⬠ââ¬Å"Yep.â⬠ââ¬Å"Masturbation?â⬠ââ¬Å"Yep.â⬠ââ¬Å"Killing? Stealing? Bearing false witness? Coveting thy neighbor's wife, et cetera? No change of heart on those?â⬠ââ¬Å"Nope.â⬠ââ¬Å"Just bacon. Interesting. You would have thought there'd be something about bacon in the prophecies of Isaiah.â⬠ââ¬Å"Yeah, makes you wonder, doesn't it?â⬠ââ¬Å"You're going to need more than that to usher in the kingdom of God, Josh, no offense. We can't go home with, ââ¬ËHi, I'm the Messiah, God wanted you to have this bacon.'â⬠ââ¬Å"I know. We have much more to learn. But breakfasts will be more interesting.â⬠ââ¬Å"Go to sleep, Josh.â⬠As time passed, I seldom saw Joshua except at mealtimes and before we went to sleep. Nearly all my time was taken up with my studies and helping the girls maintain the fortress, while nearly all of Joshua's time was spent with Balthasar, which would eventually become a problem. ââ¬Å"This is not good, Biff,â⬠Joy said in Chinese. I'd learned to speak her language well enough that she seldom spoke Greek or Latin anymore. ââ¬Å"Balthasar is getting too close with Joshua. He seldom sends for one of us to join him in his bed now.â⬠ââ¬Å"You're not implying that Joshua and Balthasar are, uh, playing shepherd, are you? Because I know that's not true. Joshua isn't allowed.â⬠Of course the angel had said he couldn't know a woman, he hadn't said anything about a creepy old African wizard. ââ¬Å"Oh, I don't care if they're buggering their eyeballs out,â⬠said Joy. ââ¬Å"Balthasar mustn't fall in love. Why do you think that there are eight of us?â⬠ââ¬Å"I thought it was a matter of budget,â⬠I said. ââ¬Å"You haven't noticed that one of us will never spend two nights in a row with Balthasar, or that we don't speak with him beyond what is required for our duties and lessons?â⬠I had noticed, but it never occurred to me that there was something out of the ordinary. We hadn't gotten to the chapter on wizard ââ¬â concubine behavior in the book yet. ââ¬Å"So?â⬠ââ¬Å"So I think he is falling in love with Joshua. That is not good.â⬠ââ¬Å"Well, I'm with you on that one. I wasn't happy the last time someone fell in love with him. But why does it matter here?â⬠ââ¬Å"I can't tell you. But there has been more commotion coming from the house of doom,â⬠said Joy. ââ¬Å"You have to help me. If I'm right, we have to stop Balthasar. We'll observe them tomorrow while we adjust the flow of Chi in the library.â⬠ââ¬Å"No, Joy. Not library Chi. The stuff in the library is too heavy. I hate library Chi.â⬠Chi or Qi: the breath of the dragon, the eternal energy that flows through all things; in balance, as it should be, it was half yin, half yang, half light, half dark, half male, half female. The Chi in the library was always getting fucked up, while the Chi in the rooms with just cushions, or with lightweight furniture, seemed well adjusted and balanced. I don't know why, but I suspected it had a lot to do with Joy's need to make me move heavy things. The next morning Joy and I went to the library to spy on Joshua and Balthasar while we redirected the library's Chi. Joy carried a complex brass instrument she called a Chi clock, which was supposed to be able to detect the flow of Chi. The magus was noticeably irritated as soon as we entered the room. ââ¬Å"Must this be done now?â⬠Joy bowed. ââ¬Å"Very sorry, master, but this is an emergency.â⬠She turned and barked commands at me like a Roman centurion. ââ¬Å"Move that table over there, can't you see that it rests on the tiger's testicles? Then point those chairs so they face the doorway, they lie on the dragon's navel. We're lucky someone hasn't broken a leg.â⬠ââ¬Å"Yeah, lucky,â⬠I said, straining to move the huge carved table, wishing that Joy had recruited a couple of the other girls to help. I'd been studying feng shui for more than three years now and I still couldn't detect the least bit of Chi, coming or going. Joshua had reconciled the elusive energy by saying that it was just an Oriental way to express God all around us and in all things. That may have helped him toward some sort of spiritual understanding, but it was about as effective as trained sheep when it came to arranging furniture. ââ¬Å"Can I help?â⬠Joshua asked. ââ¬Å"No!â⬠shouted Balthasar, standing up. ââ¬Å"We will continue in my quarters.â⬠The old wizard turned and glared at Joy and me. ââ¬Å"And we are not to be disturbed, under any circumstances.â⬠He took Joshua by the shoulder and led him out of the room. ââ¬Å"So much for spying,â⬠I said. Joy consulted the Chi clock and patted a cabinet filled with calligraphy materials. ââ¬Å"This most certainly rides on the horn of the ox, it must be moved,â⬠she pronounced. ââ¬Å"They are gone,â⬠I said. ââ¬Å"We don't have to pretend at this anymore.â⬠ââ¬Å"Who is pretending? That cabinet channels all the yin into the hall, while the yang circles like a bird of prey.â⬠ââ¬Å"Joy, stop it. I know you're making this stuff up.â⬠She dropped the brass instrument to her side. ââ¬Å"I am not.â⬠ââ¬Å"Yes, you are.â⬠And here I thought I'd push my credibility a bit, just to see. ââ¬Å"I checked the yang in this room yesterday. It is in perfect balance.â⬠Joy dropped to her hands and knees, crawled under one of the huge carved dragon tables, curled up into a ball, and began to cry. ââ¬Å"I'm no good at this. Balthasar wants us all to know it, but I've never understood it. If you want the Elegant Torture of a Thousand Pleasant Touches, I can do it, you want someone poisoned, castrated, or blown up, I'm your man, but this feng shui stuff is just, justâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ââ¬Å"Stupid?â⬠I supplied. ââ¬Å"No, I was going to say difficult. Now I've angered Balthasar and we have no way of knowing what is happening between him and Joshua. And we must know.â⬠ââ¬Å"I can find out,â⬠I said, polishing my nails on my tunic. ââ¬Å"But I have to know why I'm finding out.â⬠ââ¬Å"How will you find out?â⬠ââ¬Å"I have ways that are more subtle and crafty than all your Chinese alchemy and direction of energies.â⬠ââ¬Å"Now who's making things up?â⬠I'd lost most of my credibility by dragging out the arcane-Hebrew-knowledge-for-sexual-favors ruse until I had actually claimed credit for receiving the tablets of the Ten Commandments as well as constructing the Ark of the Covenant. (What? It's not my fault. Joshua was the one who would never let me be Moses when we were kids.) ââ¬Å"If I find out, will you tell me what is going on?â⬠The head concubine chewed at an elegantly lacquered nail as she thought about it. ââ¬Å"You promise not to tell anyone if I tell you? Not even your friend Joshua?â⬠ââ¬Å"I promise.â⬠ââ¬Å"Then do what you will. But remember your lessons from The Art of War.â⬠I considered the words of Sun-tzu, which Joy had taught me: Be extremely subtle, even to the point of formlessness. Be extremely mysterious, even to the point of soundlessness. Thereby, you can be the director of the opponent's fate. So after considering strategy carefully, running and rejecting the various scenarios in my head, working out what seemed a nearly foolproof plan, and making sure the timing was perfect, I went into action. That very night, as I lay in my bed and Joshua in his, I called forth all my powers of subtlety and mysteriousness. ââ¬Å"Hey Josh,â⬠I said. ââ¬Å"Balthasar sodomizing you?â⬠ââ¬Å"No!â⬠ââ¬Å"Vice versa?â⬠ââ¬Å"Absolutely not!â⬠ââ¬Å"You get the feeling he'd like to?â⬠He was quiet for a second, then he said, ââ¬Å"He's been very attentive lately. And he giggles at everything I say, why?â⬠ââ¬Å"Because Joy says it's not good if he falls in love with you.â⬠ââ¬Å"Well, it's not if he's expecting any sodomizing, I'll tell you that. That's going to be one disappointed magus.â⬠ââ¬Å"No, worse than that. She won't tell me what, but it's really, really bad.â⬠ââ¬Å"Biff, I realize you may not think so, but from my way of thinking, sodomizing the Son of God is really, really bad.â⬠ââ¬Å"Good point. But I think she means something to do with whatever is behind the iron door. Until I find out, you have to keep Balthasar from falling in love with you.â⬠ââ¬Å"I'll bet he was myrrh,â⬠said Josh. ââ¬Å"Bastard, he brings the cheapest gift and now he wants to sodomize me. My mother told me the myrrh went bad after a week too.â⬠Did I mention that Joshua was not a myrrh fan?
